Vista 64 bit, free firewalls, general security advice?

I got my parents a quad core, 64bit vista machine to replace their old PC. My dad is the only one that uses it and he does the general hunting, fishing, and card games, and uses it for web browsing, email, and word processing. Very general use.

On their old machine (XP), I had AVG (free version) for their anitvirus and zonealarm free for their firewall. Now that we have a new computer that is a 64 bit system instead of the usual 32...I've come to find that nothing is available for 64 bit (and I feel like we're SOL for buying that instead of a 32).

My question:
-What free software (if any) for a 64 bit Vista machine can I find to PROTECT their computer from virus & bad stuff since the free internet security thing is about to expire (and we don't want to pay to prevent infection)...

- Any suggestions for the ESSENTIAL programs (which I can find for free) I need to ensure my parents new computer is safe.

IMO, paying for internet security is like having to pay a gunman to not shoot you. Thanks for all your advice everyone!

PS, I think the old PC went bad b/c of the Limewire my dad used to download songs...he's not doing that anymore in fear of malware.

The software i'm currently using is Comodo Pro firewall and Avast Anti-Virus both are free, very effective and should work fine on 64 Bit Vista.

Avast Anti-Virus 4.8

Comodo Pro 3 (firewall)

Quote from Avast website:
"Avast Home now fully supports the 64-bit Windows platform. ALWIL Software is anticipating massive take-up of this platform"
