Free dvd burning software?

I'm brand new to the world of dvd burning, and all the fun stuff that goes along with it, and I'm hoping someone can recommend a dvd burning program (cheap, or possibly free) that doesn't require a degree in computer audio/video sciences to understand. I'm not a complete "dolt" when it comes to PC basics, but most of the dvd programs I've come across just leave me messed up, and all I'm really wanting to do is convert my Windows Media AVI files to WMA's or MPEG4's so I can burn them, and play them on my home dvd player. Anybody have any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!
