Photo Editing Software or Service to change a ".bmp" file to a ".jpg" file?

I bought an iMac and I can't copy .bmp images (from my old PC) to it. It is "grayed out" and I can't click on it. Simply re-saving it and/or changing the properties from .bmp to .jpg does not work, nor does simply uploading them to the iMac. I'm told it is a "PC imaging/environment issue" that buying "Microsoft Office for Mac" will not fix.

I asked the Geek Squad guys and they said I need Photo Editing / Imaging Software to change it from .jpg to .bmp. They suggested a free trial version of something you can sign up for on the internet (but they could not give me a specific name of one). Has anyone done this? If so, any suggestions which one I should use? Thanks!
